Here in the Pacific Northwest, there are two common species of termites: the western subterranean termite and the Pacific dampwood termite. In the United States, it is estimated that termites alone cause 5 billion dollars worth of property damage each year. Unfortunately, termite damage is usually not covered by homeowners insurance. The best way to protect your property is to know the signs of termites in the home and call a professional if you see them.
1. Mud Tubes
Subterranean termites form mud tunnels on the foundation of homes so they can travel from their nests to find food. Mud tubes are one of the more obvious signs of termites in the home. Check over your foundation looking for pencil-sized tubes. If you see any, break open a segment in the center. Then check it again in a few days. If it has been repaired, this means the termites are active.
2. Stuck Windows or Doors
If it is becoming a struggle to open windows or doors, this can be the result of a termite infestation. As termites feed on the structure of the home, it can cause the studs to warp and affect the alignment of the doors and windows. If you have noticed this problem, call a wood-destroying organism inspector.
3. Blisters in Flooring
You can find signs of subterranean termite damage by looking at your wood floors. If you notice blistering, or even dark spots, you may be dealing with a subterranean termite infestation under the floors.
4. Swarmers
When a termite colony reaches capacity, winged termites take flight as a group to find a place to start a new colony. If you happen to see a swarm of termites on your property, it is pretty certain that you have a termite infestation and should call a pest inspector.
5. Discarded Wings
Finding piles of wings that resemble fish scales is one of the telltale signs of termites in the home. Termites lose their wings after they swarm and when they are getting ready to mate. Piles of wings around the house are serious evidence that you have a termite infestation. They may also be found in spider webs.
