Fire Safety in the Home

have an extinguisher on hand for fire safety in the home

You’ve invested time and money in your house and want to keep your family safe. Read on for information about fire safety in the home to help reduce the risk of a damaging blaze.

Pay Attention to Electrical Safety

A common cause of house fires is electrical malfunctions. Be aware of how you use the electricity in your home. Don’t overload outlets or power strips. A fire can start because wiring becomes too hot. Check all your cords frequently, looking for damage or fraying. Never run extension cords under rugs; this can lead to overheating. Check the wattage limits for light fixtures and use the appropriate bulbs.

Fire Safety in the Home Means Installing Smoke Alarms

One of the most critical fire safety features is smoke detectors. Install these devices on every floor of your home and in every bedroom. Test them monthly and replace the batteries at least twice every year. A chirping detector is warning you that it’s time to change the battery.

Fire Extinguisher

Buy a fire extinguisher to handle small household fires. They are simple to use and can make a difference if a fire breaks out in your home. To use an extinguisher, follow the steps below.

  1. Hold the device so the nozzle is pointing away from your body and remove the pin.
  2. Point the nozzle low, at the base of the fire.
  3. Don’t press the lever too hard. Squeeze it evenly and gently.
  4. Sweep from side-to-side as you spray.

Create an Escape Plan

Every family member should know how to escape the home in case of a fire. Come up with an escape plan that ensures everyone can make it out of the house in two minutes or less.

Teach family members how to dial 911 and make sure your kids know what a smoke alarm sounds like. Don’t just talk about the escape plan, practice it. Install escape ladders in upstairs bedrooms to provide an exit if the fire blocks the stairs.

Teach Children About Fire Safety in the Home

  • Show them how to stop, drop, and roll in case their clothing catches fire.
  • Teach them to never open a door with a hot doorknob.
  • Help kids learn how to quickly and safely exit the house in case of a fire.
  • Explain that it’s best to crawl below the smoke to reach an exit.

Use the above fire safety tips so that your family is prepared for this type of emergency.
